Tomilola Coco Adeyemo grew up in a deeply conservative Christian family, surrounded by generations of pastors, evangelists and prophets. In the early 2020s, she began having recurring dreams — large bodies of water, spiritual beings, and eventually a presence she'd come to recognise as Ọṣun, the Yoruba deity of fresh water, love, fertility, beauty and wealth.
What she was first taught to understand as demonic began to raise a different question: what if these experiences were connected to a Yoruba spiritual inheritance she had never been taught to understand? This episode follows that shift — from fear and confusion toward curiosity and research — and how it eventually led her to identify as an Ọmọ Omi, a child of water.
The conversation moves through Christianity, dreams, Ọ̀ṣun, family spiritual histories, and the particular experience of discovering a culture you were raised to fear. It also touches on Tomi's book, Efun's Jazz, which became a way for her to explore questions she didn't yet have answers to.
It isn't a story about choosing one religion over another. It's a story about what happens when you start asking questions about who you are.
